Footnote New Zealand Dance – 2015 Submissions
2014 has been a milestone year for Footnote Dance and began with our rebranding launch and a lovely event at PreFab to rename the company Footnote New Zealand Dance. Choreolab was fantastic with thirty dancers who were excellent and energising and the new ChoreoCo. company started the year with Craig Bary’s Straight Laced new work that sold out its season at BATS Theatre. The newly named NOW season had two new works by Olive Bieringa/Otto Ramstad and Lyne Pringle, and Alexa Wilson is currently in the studio making her new work The Status of Being. Submissions for 2015 are being called for and we are aiming to bring this process forward to give more set up time for funding etc. especially for partnership proposals.
The new Four Pillar Company format is up and running and settling in – a big strategic and delivery change model and we are all very committed to making it work, not only for ourselves but also as a business model for the contemporary dance industry.
Footnote New Zealand Dance has four key pillars of activity –
• Professional Development
• Partnerships
• New Zealand Repertoire
• International
There is a clear priority for New Zealand work and work by New Zealand artists. We are committed to the choreographic and creative process that allows risk taking, develops new work, facilitates choreographic development, sustains a full-time base company that presents and tours new New Zealand works. The Artistic Advisory Panel overlooks applications and submissions and makes recommendations to the General Manager (Richard Aindow) to implement, programme and realise works.
Exciting and challenging times!
Our wonderful team of Design (Chrometoaster) and Printing (Lithoprint) are still on board and the 2014 core company of excellent professional dancers is well settled. A key work being implemented in 2014 is proposed to run into 2015 and the core company will also carry over so there will be no core company auditions this year. Do check our website and facebook – there are lots of great photos!
Upcoming Opportunity
We will be looking for an artistic/production/ rehearsal liaison person going into 2015. This role will form ‘in the studio’ support for the company and for choreographers and respond to the AAP responsibilities on a day-to-day basis. We will be looking for the ability to do some administration work and to teach regular technique classes with a responsibility for the professional well-being of the company. This person will have been a professional dancer with teaching experience and some IT knowledge, and be keen to develop skills and facilitate this new position for Footnote New Zealand Dance. There is potential for flexibility determined by the projects ‘in action’ but this is envisaged as ultimately a full-time role.

Choreolab 2015
Footnote Choreolab has firmly established itself as the most significant workshop development event for professional dance practitioners in the country. It began twelve years ago and is a well-established event on the professional New Zealand dance calendar, drawing artists from around the country and the world to the capital each summer.
Footnote Choreolab 2015 responds to a contemporary dance community voiced need for professional development and the chance to explore movement without the pressure of a formal end-product. The necessity for this explorative time is even more important today, when funding and time for freelance practitioners’ creative development time is scarce.
Footnote Choreolab is also an opportunity for freelance artists in the community to work alongside professional dancers with inspiration from master-class tutors. Guest master class tutors will be confirmed as soon as possible and there will be a focus on working with dance practitioners making work now in New Zealand.
Spotlights have evolved as a valuable communication tool for participants to interface with people with significant roles in the dance industry, and once again a range of speakers will join us at Choreolab to give their insights and expertise.
Footnote Choreolab as a three week immersion session gives time, space and inspiration for freelance artists in a summer special that takes place in Cuba Street, Wellington, New Zealand. Networking has been an important part of what Choreolab offers as many projects have evolved from the summer in Wellington. Connecting seriously creative people together has the great result of generating dance chemistry that spills out into Aotearoa throughout the following year.
Places for dancers will be limited and on a first come first served basis. Preference will be given to practitioners either in or emerging into the industry. Costs are heavily subsidised by Footnote New Zealand Dance through funding from Creative New Zealand to enable freelance professionals and practitioners the chance to have this professional development start to their dancing year of projects and research.
Fees are: $200 (Earlybird fee if paid by December 5th) or $250 (If paid by Friday January 16th 2015).
Preference is given to those coming to the full Choreolab, but the possibility of doing split weeks will be considered on an individual basis at $100 per week. Please note that Choreolab always attracts a waitlist and places that come available should come from the waitlist in the first instance.
Please note: We are in the process of confirming tutors and workshop leaders and will announce the call for applications for Choreolab 2015 on Sept 8th 2014.
ChoreoCo.
We are thrilled to announce that this new initiative that started in 2014 will happen again. Specifically intended to give short-term contract opportunity to 5/6 dancers following Choreolab. Performances will be during the New Zealand Fringe Festival. Dancers should indicate their interest when applying for Choreolab. Contract dates are proposed to be Feb 10th – March 8th and you must be available and in Wellington. We are looking at proposals that have a site-specific focus and an emphasis on works that communicate in a diversity of ways to a public community audience.
Please note: We are in the process of confirming artistic direction for ChoreoCo. 2015 and will announce the call for applications for both Choreolab 2015 and ChoreoCo 2015 on Sept 8th 2014.
