Choreographic Submissions Open For 2018 Programmes
Footnote New Zealand Dance creates an environment that offers opportunities for New Zealand choreographers based in Aotearoa or overseas to make and present their work to nationwide audiences. To support this mission, and to encourage practitioners to engage with the company in Wellington, the company’s choreographic projects are selected by the Artistic Advisory Panel (Chris Jannides, Ross McCormack, Claire O’Neil and Deirdre Tarrant), General Manager (Richard Aindow) and Artistic Liaison (Anita Hunziker).
We invite proposals for the following seasons in 2018:
Search Engine (working title)
Replacing the company’s NOW seasons for emerging practitioners, Search Engine (working title) will commission three choreographers to make new works, irrespective of their experience in the industry.
Following the success of NOW 2017: The Rebel Pink, instead of proposing concepts of their own, the three chosen choreographers will again be given a set of provocations and conditions. For 2018, these will include, amongst other things, the title Search Engine, a metallic dance floor, a world defined by LED light, and a stipulation of either two, three or five dancers. The complete list of criteria will be agreed with the successful applicants after their selection. Finished works will be around 20 minutes long and be created in Wellington over three week periods in February/March 2018, followed by a national tour of New Zealand.
To get the best results from the working period, your concept will have been researched and your approach developed and agreed before arrival in the studio. The company encourages ongoing dialogue during the process, and you will also have mentoring support from Artistic Advisory Panel member Chris Jannides and our Artistic Liaison Anita Hunziker, who will rehearsal direct this season. All commissions will include a choreographic fee, return flights to Wellington, and assistance with accommodation (if required). The choreographer is expected to be present for the premiere, but will not be required to tour with the work.
To apply, please submit a short statement covering your background, experience as a dance-maker, and reasons for wanting to work with Footnote. You should also provide a video sample of previous choreography (maximum duration 10 minutes). Please click here to complete your submission by 5pm on Sunday 29th October 2017.
Double Bill Season
This is an opportunity for New Zealand choreographers to develop a new 30 minute work on Footnote New Zealand Dance. Forming one half of a double bill, this commission will be for a company of five dancers. Footnote is also interested in exploring cross-disciplinary collaborations as part of this programme.
Following four week development periods in June/July 2018 there will be a 3 week national tour of this season in October/November 2018. This commission includes a choreographic fee and return flights to Wellington. The company encourages ongoing dialogue during the process and you will have in-studio support from members of the Artistic Advisory Panel and our Artistic Liaison. The choreographer is expected to return for final rehearsals and the premiere in October 2018, but is not expected to tour with the season.
Footnote New Zealand Dance welcomes proposals from New Zealand choreographers based in Aotearoa or overseas.
